Conjuring up images of pure escapism, the Greek Islands are on pretty much everyone’s wish list. What better way to see them than chartering your own yacht? Cruising from island to island, exploring the ancient Greek Temples, sampling the local produce that each island has to offer, seriously why wouldn’t you? There are countless routes, but below is our personal favourite.
Day 1 – Sounio
This epic sailing adventure starts from the town of Alimos just South of Athens. Set sail at 4pm and follow the magnificent coastline South until you reach the historic town of Sounio. You’ll get there in time for sunset at the ancient Temple of Poseidon, truly a sight to behold.
Day 2 – Dokos
Get your sea legs ready for a morning on the open sea. You can stop for a midday swim on our way to the uninhabited island of Dokos. The turquoise waters and rocky outcrops of this island make an enchanting home for the evening, enjoy the evening at anchor in this peaceful haven.
Day 3 – Hydra
Today we’d suggest heading to the mythical island of Hydra. The beauty of chartering your own boat is that you have all the time want to get the full experience of this magical island. Cars never made it out to this island so the only form of transport is donkey. Hydra features outstanding architecture, whitewashed houses with terracotta roofs built into the hillside, not to mention the abundance of picturesque tavernas. Don’t be fooled this town becomes alive at night and the ouzo will be flowing!
Day 4 – Perdika
From Hydra we’d suggest setting sail for Perdika. There’ll be plenty of opportunities to get the snorkels out during this beautiful day sailing around the Saronic islands. You can then spend a chilled evening in the traditional fishing village of Perdika.
Day 5 – Epidavros
If you are in need of a cultural fix UNESCO World Heritage Site, The Temple of Asklepios in Epidavros will blow your socks off! One of the worlds incredible wonders, this ancient Roman Amphitheatre has been wonderfully persevered and casually has the most magnificent backdrop of the Greek mainland. After this you can settle down in the bay of Epidavros for the evening.
Day 6 – Poros
Follow our route and there’ll be some serious swimming delights to be discovered as you reach your final island, the amazing island of Poros. Get your glad rags out and your dancing shoes on as we paint the town red on town red as this town is quite a delight, also voted Europe’s Best Island 2019.
Day 7 – Alimos
There’s nothing like a day on the open ocean to help you blow away the cobwebs! You’ll have the opportunity to discover yet more magical swimming stops, enchanting islands and stunning scenery to get your fill, before returning to port late afternoon.
